Grace Smith, one of the CCCAA's top student-athletes, missed West Valley's Wednesday afternoon game with City College of San Francisco to attend a biology lab. It made no difference for the Vikings as they rolled to a 14-1 win over the Rams to improve to 5-0 in the Coast Conference.

Attacker Kianna Melvin filled in admirably in goal for Smith, stopping five Ram shots to earn the win in the cage. Melvin split time with Johanna Scheer and Aaliyah Lax, who both saw their first minutes as a collegian in goal.

The Vikings (18-1, 5-0 Coast) sprinted out to a 9-0 lead and then slowed things down in the second half, working on offensive plays and passing.

Lax led WVC with three goals and three steals, while Kate Craig, Maria Higginbotham and Marija Mijuskovic had two goals each. Melvin, Scheer, Fatima Gonzalez Garcia, Paige McCroskey and Gaby Thomas logged a goal apiece.

The Vikings take on San Joaquin Delta (12-2) and Sierra (7-1) in the competitive Coast/Big 8 Crossover tournament Saturday at the West Valley Aquatics Center. The ball drops at 10:15am against Delta and 3:15 against Sierra.
