COS Women’s Soccer Makes History in Playoff Run
College of the Sequoias women's soccer team made program history on Wednesday, November 20, securing their first playoff victory in over 15 years with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Cañada College in the first round of the 3C2A NorCal Regional Playoffs.
Sophomore Morgan Escobar (Tulare Western HS) delivered the decisive goal early in the second half, converting on an assist from Jocelyn Arellano (Redwood HS) in the 47th minute. The Giants' defense, led by goalkeeper Haylie Brasil (Manteca), held firm throughout the match, with Brasil making 11 saves to earn her eighth shutout of the season.
"This win is a testament to the resilience and heart of this team," said Head Coach Brooklyn Morris. "We've worked hard to get to this moment, and I couldn't be prouder of the way the players executed against a tough opponent like Cañada."
The win advanced the Giants to the second round, where they faced Coast-North Conference Champions, City College of San Francisco (15-2-3, 8-1-2), on Saturday, November 23. Despite a strong effort, the Giants fell 2-0 to the second-seeded Rams, who showcased their attack with goals in the 34th and 50th minutes. Brasil was outstanding in goal once again, recording 15 saves, but the Giants were unable to find the back of the net.
Reflecting on the season, Morris highlighted the team's achievements: "This season was a huge step forward for the program. Making the playoffs and getting a playoff win is something special, and it's a foundation we'll continue to build upon."
The Giants conclude the season with a 10-7-4 overall record, marking a successful campaign that reestablished them as a competitive force in the Central Valley Conference and beyond. With key players gaining playoff experience, the future looks bright for COS women's soccer.
