COS Women's Soccer Splits Conference Matches; Prepares for Lemoore and Taft
College of the Sequoias women's soccer team split a pair of conference matches last week, starting with a 2-0 road victory over Clovis College before falling 2-0 at home to Fresno City College. Both matches showcased strong defensive efforts, with standout performances from goalkeeper Haylie Brasil (Manteca HS). The Giants will look to bounce back in their upcoming games against Lemoore and Taft.
COS 2, Clovis 0
College of the Sequoias women's soccer wrapped up a road match last week with a 2-0 victory over Clovis College, improving their Central Valley Conference record to 2-2-3 (4-4-4 overall). The Giants took control in the latter stages of each half, with goals in the 44th and 53rd minutes to seal the win.
The match remained scoreless for much of the first half, with both teams unable to create clear chances. However, Amber Cole (Lemoore HS) broke the deadlock just before halftime, scoring off an assist from Morgan Escobar (Tulare Western HS) in the 44th minute to give COS a 1-0 lead heading into the break.
"We talked before the game about being patient and taking advantage of the opportunities we create," said head coach Brooklyn Morris. "Amber's goal just before the half was crucial. It gave us the momentum we needed going into the second half."
The Giants extended their advantage early in the second half when Alondra Torres (Kennedy HS) added an unassisted goal in the 53rd minute, capitalizing on a defensive miscue. Torres' goal provided the insurance the Giants needed to secure the win.
"Alondra's goal really took the pressure off," added Morris. "We knew Clovis would push hard to equalize, but our defense stayed disciplined, and we managed the game well."
COS goalkeeper Haylie Brasil had an excellent showing between the posts, recording four saves to keep Clovis off the scoresheet and earn her clean sheet.
"Haylie has been rock solid for us all season," said Morris. "She made some key saves that allowed us to stay in control, and I'm proud of her performance."
Clovis battled but couldn't overcome the disciplined defense and sharp counterattacking play of the Giants, who managed the game well down the stretch.
COS 0, Fresno City 2
The Giants suffered a tough 2-0 defeat against Fresno City College on Tuesday at Sequoias Stadium. The loss drops COS to 4-5-4 overall and 2-3-3 in Central Valley Conference play, while Fresno City remains unbeaten in conference at 12-2 overall.
Fresno City took the lead in the 27th minute when Alyssa White scored off an assist from Rylee Heffner. Despite a resilient defensive effort from the Giants, Fresno added a second goal in the 55th minute, with Daisy Torres finding the back of the net, assisted again by White.
The Giants goalkeeper Haylie Brasil delivered a standout performance, making 10 saves to keep the game within reach for the Giants. "Haylie was fantastic today, and her saves kept us in it," said head coach Brooklyn Morris. "We faced a really tough team, but we need to find ways to create more chances and capitalize on them."
Fresno's defense made it tough for COS throughout the match. "We'll take this as a learning experience and look to bounce back in our next game," added Morris.
