
For the second night in a row the Pirates' women's basketball team produced a big home win, easily defeating Foothill College 86-57 Friday. Milan Garcia hit five more three's in a 23-point performance and Alexa Coubal had a double-double of 17 points and 16 rebounds. Sam McKenzie also netted 17 with eight boards and five assists and Charnelle Nichols totaled 12 points in the victory. Alanna Topete reached double-figures in assists with 11 dimes to go along with eight points. Danielle Salazar added nine points off the bench.
The Pirates broke open an 8-7 game midway through the first quarter with a 14-1 run. Coubal assisted a Nichols lay-up, then Nichols cashed in Topete's dime for another deuce. Salazar hit from three and McKenzie answered an Owl free throw with another long-range bomb. Nichols made two more inside shots, both assisted by Coubal, and VC led 22-8 in the final minute of the first period.
VC continued the offensive express with a 25-point second quarter. Garcia scored wight straight points during one stretch and VC shot 6-11 from three in the period. Four different players hit from beyond the arc as Ventura led 47-27 at halftime.
Play slowed in the second half but the Pirates never relinquished control of the game. Garcia netted five of VC's first nine points in the stanza and Coubal's jumper with 5:28 left in the quarter extended the lead to 58-31. Garcia continued her hot shooting into the final period, scoring a two and a three on the first two possessions of the quarter to set the tone of comfort for VC down the stretch. The Pirates cruised to the 86-57 win.
Ventura will complete its non-conference schedule at home on Dec. 27 and 28, hosting its annual crossover games. The Pirates play Irvine Valley at 6:00 pm on Friday before hosting El Camino at 4:00 pm on Saturday.
