BAKERSFIELD, CA - The Bakersfield College women's soccer team continued their strong season with a 3-1 victory over Santiago Canyon, improving their record to 4-1-1. Despite being outshot 20-4, the Renegades made their chances count and relied on goalkeeper Mercedes Ramirez to secure the win.
The visiting Santiago Canyon took the early lead in the 36th minute when the Hawks scored an unassisted goal. However, Bakersfield responded quickly. In the 39th minute, Arlene Gonzalez found the back of the net with an assist from Emily Lozano, leveling the score at 1-1.
The Renegades continued to push forward and struck again just three minutes later. This time, it was Emily Lozano who scored, assisted by Melanie Mendizabal, giving BC a 2-1 lead going into halftime.
In the second half, Bakersfield extended their lead in the 54th minute. Alexandra Gallardo scored with an assist from Mayson Saffouri, making it 3-1. Despite SC's relentless attack, which produced 20 shots (17 on goal), the Renegades' defense and goalkeeper held firm. Ramirez delivered a standout performance, making 14 saves to keep Santiago Canyon at bay.
The Renegades will have another opportunity to improve their record when they take their home field again this Friday, September 20th. BC will welcome Ventura City College for a match at 1:30 PM.
