
COS Women’s Soccer Wraps Up Strong Regular Season with Playoff Berth
Following a competitive regular season, College of the Sequoias (COS) women's soccer team (9-6-4, 7-4-3 Central Valley Conference) secured a spot in the CCCAA NorCal Regional Playoffs. The Giants, the No. 20 seed, will face the No. 13 seeded Cañada College (11-6-3, 6-4-1 Coast-South Conference) in the opening round on Wednesday, November 20.
COS concluded the season with a third-place finish in the Central Valley Conference, behind league leaders Fresno City and Merced. The Giants demonstrated a balanced attack and staunch defense throughout the season, earning a 0.84 goals-against average and recording 10 shutouts.
The offense was led by forward Jimena Rivera (Golden West HS), who netted seven goals and provided two assists, including two game-winners. Midfielder Jocelyn Arellano (Redwood HS) contributed five goals, while America Lopez (Exeter HS) added four, showcasing COS's diverse scoring threats. Goalkeeper Haylie Brasil (Manteca) anchored the defense with 101 saves and seven individual shutouts. Brasil is also 5th in the state in save pct (.878).
Cañada College enters the playoffs led by Rosa Churape, who tallied 16 goals during the regular season. The Colts' defense, featuring goalkeeper Jianna Nabung, recorded 11 shutouts and held opponents to a 0.88 goals-against average.
"This group has shown a lot of resilience and growth throughout the season," said COS Head Coach Brooklyn Morris. "We've faced tough opponents in a very competitive conference, and our ability to stay focused and keep improving is a testament to the character of this team."
Morris also highlighted the importance of their postseason opportunity: "Getting to the playoffs is always a big achievement, and we're excited for the challenge ahead. Cañada is a strong team, but we feel prepared to compete."
Kickoff is set for 2:00 PM at Cañada College, promising an intense battle between two teams competing to extend their postseason journeys.
