The VC men's basketball team had one of those nights and could not keep up with visiting Los Angeles Southwest Wednesday. Despite 18 points each from Bo Dolinsek and Elijah Brown, the Pirates dropped a 100-78 decision to the Cougars. Jeremiah Wilson and Kam'Ron Cigar netted 17 and 15 points, respectively, in the setback.
After trailing 6-0 early, the Pirates came back with a 12-2 run. K. Cigar's three put the Pirates ahead 10-8 and Dolinsek scored inside for the 12-8 edge. Unfortunately, the Cougars sandwiched a pair of three's around a lay-up to retake a lead they would not relinquish for the rest of the night.
Dolinsek scored inside to pull VC to within 16-14 at the 12:30 mark before LASW pulled away with a 9-0 run over the next 1:40. Brown's 3-pointer with 9:34 on the clock made it 27-20, and LASW continued to pull away from there. The Cougars led 55-36 at halftime.
Ventura fought hard in the second half, but couldn't seem to make up any ground. The LA Southwest lead remained around 15 points for much of the period before Jeremiah Wilson hit a pair of free throws with 3:07 left to play to make it 86-74. That would be ask close as the Pirates could get, however, in the 22-point loss.
Dolinsek and Isaiah Dudley led VC on the boards with seven rebounds each while Kevin Hymes and K. Cigar each dropped three dimes. Hymes also had three steals and Dolinsek recorded three blocked shots.
Ventura next travels to San Diego City College on Saturday Nov. 16 for a 3:00 pm game.
