
The Pasadena City College women's water polo team celebrated Sophomore Day on Wednesday prior to the team's 14-9 loss to Chaffey in the Lancers' home finale at Pasadena Poly.
While Luna Encinas missed the game due to injury, the other two lettermen excelled with Ivy Samuel netting a game-high six goals plus making three field blocks while Emily Padilla made four assists and two steals.
Samuel fired in a shot from mid-pool that helped PCC to cut it to 9-6 midway through the third quarter, but Chaffey traded goals with the Lancers the rest of the way to maintain its lead.
PCC goalie Rae Jiao was outstanding with seven saves, including stopping a penalty shot. Marissa Granados added two goals and five steals while Daisy Reynoso also reached the net with a late power play goal.
For Chaffey, Mya Duran led her squad with four goals and three assists.
Besides the sophomores, PCC head coach Terry Stoddard ackowledged the 23 years of service as a water polo scorebook worker in Eugenia Makai, a former Lancers swimmer.
The Lancers will play in the South Coast Conference Championships with two games on Thursday, Nov. 7. With the #8 seed, PCC faces #1 Long Beach City at 11:30 a.m. PCC will then play at 5 p.m. The Lancers will then finish their season with a place final on Saturday, Nov. 9.
