
SAN FRANCISCO – The 2024 City College of San Francisco women's volleyball season officially got underway on Friday as the Rams hosted three opponents in a quad match at the Wellness Center Gym.
Unfortunately, the season got off to a tough start for new head coach Darlene Klemens and her Rams squad. CCSF opened the day's action with a 25-16, 25-18, 25-13 loss to Allan Hancock College. That was followed by a 25-13, 25-17, 25-22 setback to Reedley College. And the Rams wrapped up opening day with a 3-1 loss, as the battled before falling by scores of 25-19, 21-25, 27-25, 25-16.
Freshman Mary Shunashi Hernandez-Elorza had a huge match in her debut for the Rams against Allan Hancock. The outside hitter from North Tahoe led CCSF with 11 kills and added 7 digs. Malia Trinidad had a team-best 10 digs while setter Maihli Hunkin totaled 18 assists and 7 digs.
CCSF had a tough time on offense against Reedley. Dayana Gonzalez led with 5 kills while Hernandez-Elorza came up with 16 digs on the defensive end of the court.
The Rams nearly forced Napa Valley to five sets but came up short in a pivotal 27-25 third-set loss. Hernandez-Elorza and Gonzalez both had 7 kills and 8 digs each to lead San Francisco.
CCSF, now 0-3 overall, returns to action next Friday (Aug. 30) when the Rams host Columbia College at 4 p.m. and Mendocino College at 6 p.m. in a tri match at the Wellness Center.
