GILROY – City College of San Francisco totaled 17 hits in its 2024 season opener but unfortunately came out on the losing end of a 10-7 contest at Gavilan College on Tuesday.
Mark Zhu, Justin Verna, and Kaleo Velez were all impressive in their CCSF season debuts, collecting 3 hits to lead the Rams at the plate. Zhu went 3 for 5 with a double and 2 RBI, Verna was 3 for 5 with a pair of runs scored, and Velez went 3 for 5 with an RBI.
Despite the offensive outburst, CCSF had trouble keeping Gavilan off the board. Gavilan, the designated visiting team, went up 4-0 after scoring three times in the top of the fourth inning. Two more runs by Gavilan in the fourth gave it a 6-1 advantage.
Angel Acosta took the loss in the opening-day start. He allowed 4 runs and 4 hits over 4 innings. He struck out 4 and walked 6.
CCSF, now 0-1, returns to action on Friday (Feb. 2) at 2 p.m. when the Rams take on College of the Redwoods in San Pablo.
