TAFT, CA – So far Taft College Women's Basketball has had their highest ranking ever in the history of the program, moving to #9 in the NorCal Regional rankings a few weeks ago. However, in their last four games starting the new year, the Lady Cougars split in non-conference and lost two consecutive conference games.
On January 4, they lost to visiting #20 ranked Santa Ana College 47-76, defeated Compton College on the road 105-30 on January 6, then returned home losing their conference home opener to undefeated #1 ranked College of the Sequoias 119-67 on January 9, and losing again recently on January 11 to #19 Fresno City College 62-72.
Taft College Head Women's Basketball Coach Romeo Lagmay, Jr. explained the team's woes, "It's a culmination of issues that kind of all snowballed all at once. Those issues involve injury, illness, academic, and suspension. Along with that, we had to play 3 top ranked teams with one of them being #1. It came at a very unfortunate time as we were not at full strength, having to suit up 6 players a few times during these games. We will be fine, and I appreciate the continued hard work and perseverance of the limited players we have suited up. We appreciate our fans continuing to support us through the ups and downs. I'm confident we will be back in the saddle running full strength and back to winning."
Taft will resume conference action this Wednesday when they travel to Porterville College seeking their first conference win. They will return home on Saturday, January 18 against Merced College at 3:00 pm.
