W. Basketball: Falcons run out of gas in the fourth quarter in 42-38 loss

Leading the majority of the game, the Cerritos College women's basketball team hit a dry spell from the field in the fourth quarter a suffered a 42-38 non-conference loss at Los Angeles Mission College on Friday night. The Falcons (5-9) are right back at it on Saturday when they travel to Glendale College for a 3:00 p.m. game.

On top by as many as 14 points (28-14) with 7:20 remaining in the third quarter, Cerritos went cold from the field and converted just 3-of-26 shots the remainder of the game, which included multiple layups. By contrast the Eagles found a hot hand and netted 12-of-28 shots and took a late lead with 49 seconds remaining.

The Falcons led 38-33 with 2:20 remaining after a three-pointer from freshman Mia Avalos (Pioneer HS). But LA Mission scored the final nine points of the game to pull out the win.

Limited to just six players, Cerritos had three of their players compete in all 40 minutes. Freshman Genesis Salinas (Downey HS) led the team with 10 points and added three rebounds and three assists, with sophomore Francine Carrillo (Cerritos HS) finishing with eight points and 10 rebounds. Freshmen Natalie Poppin (La Habra HS) and Lauryn Nakamura (Cypress HS) combined for 13 points, while Nakamura pulled down seven rebounds, with Avalos accounting for five points off the bench.
