Behind strong pitching from Arianna Izaguirre, softball earns 8th consecutive win

The San Diego Mesa College softball team continues to roll, earning its 8th consecutive victory after defeating Fullerton College 5-4 on Monday. The Olympians are now 16-12 overall and 7-2 in the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference. Fullerton College, a traditional powerhouse in softball is having an outstanding year. The Hornets are 23-11 overall and 13-3 Orange Empire Conference, placing them second behind conference leader Cypress College. 

The Olympians are peaking at the right time, having outscored their opponents 48-27 over the last eight games. 

The Hornets struck in the top of the first inning, putting up 2 runs after Meah Almaraz doubled, bringing in Serena Vue and Coco Siono. Mesa answered at the bottom of the second inning when Carlotta Gonzalez singled bringing in Jolene Giles to bring the score 1-2 in favor of Fullerton. Halle Sweiss was able to equalize the score for Mesa  at 2-2 after singling to bring home Gonzalez. In the bottom of the third-inning, Jolene Giles tripled, scoring Ambria Guye, to give the Olympians a 3-2 lead. 

The Hornets, always known for their scrappy play, answered right back in the top of the 4th inning scoring two more runs to swing the momentum back to Fullerton and the lead at 4-3. Once again, the Olympians fought back in the bottom of the fifth-inning to even the score at 4-4 after a double by Carolotta Gonzalez that brought Kori Jonilonis across home plate. 

With the score even at 4-4, the top of the 7th inning started out with Arianna Izzaguirre striking out Caitlyn Stear. The Hornets once again threatened after Cassidy Hornung tripled, leaving the go ahead run on third-base. With one out, Izaguirre was replaced by Bailey Oftedahl, who immediately secured the second out striking out Coo Siono, and then forced Jordan Elias to ground out to first base to end the inning and threat. 

With two outs in the bottom of the 7th inning, Jonilonis singled and reached first base. Carlotta Gonzalez followed with another single, which advanced Jonilonis to second base, and then to third-base after an error by the right fielder, which was then followed by another error by the shortstop which brought Jonilonis home for the game winning run 5-4. 

Arianna Izaguirre earned her 9th win of the year having gone 6.1 innings and only giving up 2 earned runs. Arianna Salazar continues to lead the team with 21 RBI's. 

Next up for the Olympians will be an important match-up against Palomar College on Friday, April 21. First pitch at Bradley Park is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start.
