Volleyball: Cerritos rolls past LA Harbor in three sets

Needing only 70 minutes to knock off visiting Los Angeles Harbor College on Friday, the Cerritos College volleyball team picked up their eighth consecutive victory. The Falcons (12-2, 4-0), who are in first place in the South Coast Conference South Division, will travel to Los Angeles City College for a 6:00 p.m. conference match next Wednesday. They defeated the Seahawks 25-9, 25-19, 25-7.

Cerritos rolled out to big leads in the first and third sets, while in the second set, they started slow but regrouped for the win. They trailed, 14-12 in the second set, took a 15-14 lead and then were down, 16-15 before recording 10 of the final 13 points.

As a team, the Falcons hit .364 and received kills from 10 different players and assists from five players. Sophomore Monserrat Rodriguez (Gahr HS/Long Beach City College) slammed home nine kills without an error, while sophomore Sydney May (Los Alamitos HS/UC Santa Cruz) led the team with 10 kills, while adding seven assists. Coming off the bench, freshmen Josie Navarro (Sierra Vista HS) and Evelyn Soto-Castro (Schurr HS) saw extended playing time and combined for five kills with no errors.

As for sophomores Jasmine Soto-Castro (Schurr HS) and Lillianna Peterson (California HS), they capped off their nights with six and five kills, respectively, with sophomore setter Leeya Rubio (Schurr HS) recording a pair of kills to go along with her 24 assists, 10 digs and three service aces. Even libero Priscilla Castillo (Schurr HS) had a kill in the win and led the team with 13 digs.
