Antelope Valley Baseball won game 2 of their conference series against College of the Canyons 17-8 on Thursday.
The Marauders jumped to an early lead, scoring 4 runs in the first inning and 4 in the second. Canyons had a big 5-run inning in the second but remained scoreless for the next six innings. AVC consistently put points on the board with a run in the third, 3 in the sixth, 3 in the 7th, and 2 in the eighth.
Cody Turner provided much of the firepower, going 4-for-6 with 5 RBI. Turner (Pete Knight HS, Palmdale) continues to lead the Western State Conference South in batting average at .475 and runs batted in with 57. Joel Calderin Serrano had a productive day at the plate with 4 RBI off 3 hits. Lucas Martinez and Mitchell Thoma-Britt had a hit and 2 RBI each, while Keon Moseni, Aidan Jbara, and Xavier Cantu each added an RBI. Eddy Stone went 2-for-2 and scored twice.
Starter Darren Roberts was efficient on the mound, going 7 innings and striking out 7 batters. The 6'1 sophomore from Highland High leads AVC pitchers with an 8-1 record this season. He is tied with fellow Antelope Valley native Cody Turner for the most strikeouts at 63.
AVC dropped the series 1-2 after falling at Canyons 10-5 on Friday. They are 17-15 overall and 6-9 in conference play. Next is their series against Bakersfield College, starting at home on Tuesday, April 16, at 2:30 PM.
