Palomar Stuns No. 9 Santiago Canyon with Dominant Second Half

SAN MARCOS, CA (11/22/2024) -- In a game for the books, the Palomar College men's basketball team delivered a stunning 88-78 upset over No. 9 Santiago Canyon College at the Dome on Friday night. Trailing 31-26 at halftime, the Comets erupted in the second half, outscoring the Hawks 62-47 with a scorching offensive display and a relentless defensive effort.

Max Zylicz led the charge with a season-high 23 points, including five three-pointers and an almost perfect 6-for-7 from the free-throw line. Zylicz's scoring spark off the bench energized the Comets and turned the tide in their favor. Trailing by two with roughly three minutes to go, Zylicz hit the go-ahead trey off an assist from Matin Madadkar that sent the Dome into a frenzy.

Jaidyn Norman was a force on both ends, contributing 21 points, nine rebounds, and four assists, while shooting an efficient 7-of-12 from the field. Norman recorded two steals, including the steal that set up the go-ahead bucket by Zylicz. Isaiah Tolmaire chipped in 13 points, six rebounds, and five assists, providing consistent playmaking and steady leadership throughout the game. Forward Isaiah Pomare added another double-double to his season totals with 12 points and 10 rebounds, anchoring Palomar in the paint. Dylan Kail also stepped up with 12 points, draining four three-pointers at critical moments to keep the momentum firmly in Palomar's favor.

The Comets' offense ignited in the second half, shooting 69.2% from the field and an impressive 72.7% from beyond the arc after struggling early. Palomar's defense was equally impressive, forcing 18 turnovers and recording eight steals. Their ability to disrupt Santiago Canyon's offense in the second half was a key factor in the victory. Despite being outscored in the paint 46-34, the Comets capitalized on transition opportunities and points off turnovers, outscoring the Hawks 18-12 in that category.

This signature win improves the Comets' record to 3-2 and serves as a major confidence boost heading into the rest of the season. With a balanced attack and growing cohesion, Palomar proved they can compete with some of the best teams in the state. Next, the Comets will look to carry this momentum into their upcoming matchup against West LA College on November 26th on the road.
