Rebounding from a tough 43-40 loss against Mt. San Jacinto College on Monday, the Chaffey women's basketball team roared back with a decisive 88-42 victory over San Bernardino Valley College.
Compared to first meeting this season, where the Panthers trailed 23-20 at halftime, they came out firing tonight, doubling their previous halftime output. "We talked about being our authentic selves," emphasized Head Coach Kendly Rizea. "In our first game against SBVC, we were relaxed and sloppy. We need to be playing at an elite level every game."
Ty Peters led the Panthers with an all-around performance of 16 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals, and 3 blocks. Jada Cuellar also had a standout game, adding 13 points, 5 rebounds, 5 steals, and 2 assists, along with 1 block. Fatimah Sani contributed with 12 points, 9 rebounds, 2 assists, and a steal. Danielle Singley rounded out the double-digit scorers with 11 points, while also leading the team with 10 rebounds and adding 3 assists and 2 steals.
Coming off the bench, Akami Garrett provided a spark with 7 points, 1 assist, and a steal.
Rizea highlighted the play of Ty Peters, whom the coaching staff has been urging to be more decisive on the court. They were extremely pleased with her performance and are encouraged to see her move the basketball with such confidence for the rest of the season. Danielle Singley was also instrumental in tonight's win. "Danielle has always been steady for us," adds Rizea. "We are fortunate she's able to continue playing since her nose injury. She hasn't missed a beat."
Freshman Akami Garrett coming off the bench, added 7 points, 1 assist, and a steal. While Garrett has spent much of the season learning, growing, and adjusting to the college game, the coaching staff's trust in her is increasing due to her consistent offensive and defensive execution. She is expected to be a key contributor this year, with her role anticipated to grow steadily throughout the season.
The Panthers dominated this game from start to finish. The balanced box score, with contributions from every player on the roster, is what the coaching staff looks for. As the team heads into the second half of conference play, performances like this will be important for their success.
