Through the first five innings of their game against Santiago Canyon College on Tuesday, the Cerritos College softball team was in a tight 2-0 game. However, a four-run sixth inning, thanks to a two-out grand slam by sophomore shortstop Marley Manalo (Walnut HS) gave the Falcons some insurance runs. But the highlight of the day was the no-hitter tossed by sophomore Reanna Carranza (El Rancho HS), who only pitched two over the minimum against the Hawks (1-3).
It was the first no-hitter in Falcon history since Gabriela Villarreal and Jessica Lozano shared a five-inning no-hitter against Compton College on March 1, 2011 in a 20-0 win.
Cerritos (2-0) will travel to Grossmont College for a 2:00 p.m. game on Wednesday.
In the big inning, the Falcons loaded the bases with two outs, as freshman second baseman Ayiana Cardenas (Walnut HS) drew a walk and sophomore outfielder Jocelyn Doan (Walnut HS) reached on a fielder's choice. Sophomore outfielder Jazmine Macias (La Mirada HS) then hit a spinning ball to Santiago Canyon first baseman Kaitlyn Murphy, who was unable to handle the ball, allowing all runners to advance. Manalo then blasted a 3-2 pitch over the centerfield fence to clear the bases.
Carranza (pictured, left), who struck out a pair of batters, worked out of a tight situation in the third inning. Madison Lee led off by reaching on an error when Manalo and Doan collided with each other on a pop-up. Kiana Bell then advanced Lee to second base for the first out. The next batter, Murphy, grounded to sophomore third baseman Natalie Basurto (Walnut HS), who caught Lee too far off second base and cut her down diving back to second base. The Falcons committed a two-out error in the fourth inning, by Carranza saw Tasneen Kerdiva line out to Doan in center for the final out.
Cerritos got on the board in the bottom of the first inning when Macias led off with a single and stole second base. With one out, Macias came home on a single by sophomore catcher Jimena Velazquez (Fullerton Union HS). The Falcons picked up their second run in the fourth inning when Carbajal drew a walk before pinch-runner Miranda Romo (Alhambra HS) stole second base. She moved to third on a single by freshman designated player Morgan Fontela (Long Beach Millikan HS) and came home on a sacrifice fly by Cardenas.
