Women's Soccer Win First Game of Season

Women's Soccer Win First Game of Season

The Citrus College Women's Soccer team opened their season at home with an impressive 2-1 win over San Diego Mesa.

The Owls move to 1-0 on the season while the San Diego Mesa Olympians fall to 1-4.

In a game originally scheduled for a 3 p.m. kickoff time, an Excessive Heat Warning in Los Angeles County forced the game to be pushed back to 6 p.m.

The heat did not stop the Owls and Olympians from competing at a high-level right from the start. Although no goals were scored in the first half, battles for ball control and 1 on 1 goalie vs attacker sequences filled the half with excitement.

The Owls broke the tie in the second half with a goal in the 54th minute by Alexia Leon, assisted by Sarah Nelson. Aubrianna Meija added a goal in the 71st minute on a perfect pass from Emily Cherry.

Goalie Lilliana Miramontes had a great game, making several crucial saves. Of the 10 shots on goal Miramontes had nine saves, allowing one goal in the 90th minute before the game ended.

Citrus will look to add another win to their record as they host San Bernardino Valley next Tuesday, September 10th at 6 p.m.
