Riverside City College gave Coach Phil Mathews his 600th career victory Friday evening, downing West LA 90-85 in overtime.
The Tigers improve to 2-0 after beating Antelope Valley College 74-60 yesterday – stats were not available for the game yet. The Wildcats drop to 1-1 with their first loss of the early season.
Three Tigers finished in double figures, led by Corey Mitchell with 25 points (9-for-14) off the bench. Christian Warren followed with 19 points (5-for-10), while Deacon Toliver added 18 points (7-for-10) and had 14 rebounds for a double-double.
RCC won the glass 43-to-35 with Andre Skelin and Mitchell just on the cusp of double-digit rebounds after each grabbing nine boards.
After the two teams couldn't get it done in regulation, it forced overtime.
Warren got the Tigers going with the first eight points for RCC, but West LA kept it close after banking in a jump shot with 37 seconds left (87-85).
With just about 11 seconds left on the clock, West LA turned the ball over and Mitchell put the exclamation point on the game with a layup to seal the 90-85 victory.
Riverside closes out the Ventura College tournament on Saturday, taking on the host Pirates at 2 p.m.
