TAFT, CA –
Taft College Women's Basketball is on a four-game win streak. On Saturday, December 7, Taft defeated the visiting team Los Medanos College 89-36. The Cougars now own a 7-3 overall record, sitting currently in second place in the Central Valley Conference.
The Los Medanos Mustangs had no chance of striking distance as Taft was able to win every quarter of the game (21-8, 24-10, 27-10, 17-8). Taft poured on their strengths in every aspect of the game. They outscored Los Medanos 30-0 in fastbreak points, 27-5 points off turnovers, second chance points 14-9 and points in the paint 64-14. The Black and Gold attack continued while outrebounding the Mustangs 57-31, taking advantage of assists 17-8, caused more deflections 22-6, and collected more steals 17-5. TC shot 51% from the field.
Taft Head Women's Basketball Coach Romeo Lagmay, Jr. commented, "Though it was a lopsided win, I still give credit for Coach Pharr and his team still wanting to compete and keeping his team intact pushing for improvement, and not backing down. I have lots of respect for that. Some teams just forfeit. Taft Basketball is continuing to do better as well, and I am just thankful for all the support we are getting from those in the community and campus just because of the historical suffering this program had to deal with within nearly the past two decades."
Leading freshman point guard Ella Waufle and leading rebounder sophomore Amaya Payne led the game with 16 points apiece. Payne also led the game with 15 rebounds. Madyn Kassatly had 13 points and 8 rebounds. Alyah Blackwater and Faith Wilson both had 10 points. All nine suited players scored with contributions from Mary Pahukoa pumping in 8 points, Alesha Gordon 7 points and 9 rebounds, Kahree Horton contributing 7 points, and Shantiana Alvarez chipping in with 2 points.
Taft will be back in action this Monday and Wednesday on their home turf looking to extend their winning streak versus Barstow College and Copper Mountain College, respectively. Both games will be played at 6:00 pm.
