MSJC Women Suffer First Loss at OCC

The MSJC women's basketball team suffered their first loss of the season on Wednesday night losing on the road at Orange Coast 72-59.

The Eagles led after the opening quarter 19-17 but could not keep that advantage into the half. The Pirates outscored the Eagles 18-10 in the second to gain a 35-29 lead at the break. MSJC could not get any closer in the second half as they suffered 21 turnovers in the game and made just 5 of 12 free throws on the night.

Vika Afungia led the MSJC offense with 13 points. She also grabbed a team high 8 rebounds. Princess McCauley added 12 points and Trinity Skinner hit double figures with 10. Natalie Derla dished out a team high 4 assists and Kohen Marshall came off the bench to score 7 points.

The loss drops the Eagles to 4-1 for the season while the two-time defending state champions Orange Coast improve to 4-2.

The Eagles jump right back into action on Saturday when they host Mt. SAC at 5 pm as part of a doubleheader with the men's team. MSJC ranked #10 in the state in the pre-season poll will take on the Mounties who are currently 4-1 and ranked #4. The MSJC men's team will tip-off Saturday at 3 pm prior to the women's game.
