Bear Cubs battle but fall to Sierra College

For their third Big 8 contest in five days, the Bear Cubs (11-5, 2-2) hosted the Wolverines (13-2, 3-1) of Sierra College. The Wolverines drained a 3-pointer ninety-three seconds into the game to get on the scoreboard first. Twenty-four seconds later Kaia Eubanks banked in a 1-footer off of Lindsey Arellano's assist. The Wolverines sank another 3-pointer and a field goal before Hailey Webb cut into the open middle of the key, caught Arellano's pass, and tossed in the 4-footer. The Wolverines put in two more field goals, and then Webb and Ivy Gonzalez swished back-to-back 3-pointers to close the gap to 10-12 at the 2:04 mark. A Wolverine 3-pointer was followed by Gonzalez's scoring drive. Two Wolverine free throws gave them a 17-12 lead with 1:13 on the clock. Caitlin Baldwin sank a 3-pointer 17 seconds later. Katie Leeth's basket made their lead 19-15 with 14 seconds left. Cece Solano's low post shot from two feet away went in three seconds before the buzzer, cutting the Wolverines' lead to 19-17.

Katie Leeth scored the first field goal of the second quarter on their opening possession. Kaia Eubanks took the Bear Cubs' first shot by dribbling around the baseline defenders and sinking the reverse layup. Dibora Leaf answered with a 3-pointer. Hailey Webb tossed in a 2-footer, Leeth made another field goal, and then Caitlin Baldwin swished her second 3-pointer, so the Bear Cubs were still behind by two points with 7:16 on the clock. During the remainder of the period, the Wolverines added two 3-pointers and two field goals. Meanwhile the Bear Cubs also put in 10 more points on Ivy Gonzalez's 7-foot pullup jumper, Cece Solano's two-footer off of Lindsey Arellano's assist, one free throw by Gonzalez, her scoring drive from half court, and her 3-point play on a 16-footer jumper. By halftime the Bear Cubs were still behind by two points at 34-36.

The Bear Cubs briefly took the lead on Kaia Eubanks' basket and Shasta Vlasak's 4-foot floater at the 7:20 mark. Juliana Chavez made two baskets in a row before Ivy Gonzalez sank two free throws and a 4-foot fadeaway jumper with 5:09 on the clock for a 42-40 lead. The Wolverines put together a 9-0 run on three field goals and a 3-pointer by Dibora Leaf with 3:00 left. Sydney Martin scored on a pick-and-roll play with Hailey Webb 24 seconds later. After the Wolverines missed their next shot, Gonzalez drew a foul and made just the second free throw. Leaf's 3-pointer with 1:30 remaining completed the Wolverines' scoring in the period. Eubanks drew a shooting foul and made one free throw, leaving the Bear Cubs in a 46-52 hole.

The Wolverines' two post players, Sarah Reuter and Katie Leeth, each scored a basket over their shorter defenders in the first minute of the fourth quarter, with Leeth's a 3-point play, to widen their lead to 57-46. Cece Solano's up-and-under low post shot and Kaia Eubanks' drive cut the deficit to 50-57 at the 6:46 mark. Twenty-three seconds later Juliana Chavez made a field goal. The Bear Cubs scored seven unanswered points on Ivy Gonzalez's 8-foot fade away shot, Eubanks' 6-footer after cutting down the middle and catching Lindsey Arellano's pass, and Gonzalez's 3-pointer to close the gap to 57-59 with 3:36 on the clock. Reuter banked in a close shot with 3:19 left. Eubanks was fouled on a shot attempt with 2:07 left and made both free throws. After a Wolverine miss, Sydney Martin drew their fifth team foul, so she went to the free throw line with 1:16 on the clock. She made both, tying the score at 61-61. With the shot clock about to sound, Leeth swished a 3-pointer from the top. The Bear Cubs were unable to score and eventually had to foul. Dibora Leaf sank both free throws with 17 seconds to go. The Bear Cubs called a timeout, but their final shot was off target, resulting in a 66-61 win by the Wolverines.

The Wolverines held the lead for most of the game, but the Bear Cubs kept it close. The Wolverines made nine 3-pointers, while the Bear Cubs made five. The Wolverines missed two free throws and the Bear Cubs five of theirs. Three Wolverines reached double figures in scoring: Katie Leeth with 14, Dibora Leaf 13, and Juliana Chavez 10.

Ivy Gonzalez led all scorers with 23 points. Kaia Eubanks registered her third double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Hailey Webb added 7 points, Caitlin Baldwin and Cece Solano 6 each, Sydney Martin 4, and Shasta Vlasak 2. Ivy
