Huskies Comeback Falls Short to Saddleback

Huskies Comeback Falls Short to Saddleback

by Cerwin D Haynes

The Alvin Hunter Classic at San Bernardino Valley College offered the public it's first look at the 2024-25 edition of East LA College men's basketball. The team flashed a lot of talent in the front and backcourt, but unfortunately they fell behind Saddleback College and couldn't quite catch all the way up, falling to the Bobcats 91-87. Sophomore PG Kamren Williams led all East scorers with 16 points, while fellow soph G/F Esteban Mann and freshman G Denton Latimore added 12 points apiece.

ELAC opened the game hitting the first two shots of the contest off good offensive execution. But then Saddleback responded by going on an early 10-2 run to take a 10-6 lead at the 16:24 mark in the first half. The Huskies would respond, but Saddleback found ways to keep the Pack at arms-length throughout the first half. East LA trailed 44-36 at halftime.

The first eight-plus minutes of the second half saw the Huskies consistently trail the Bobcats by double-digits. But to their credit, they would trim the deficit several times later in the half to pull within five to six points of Saddleback. Unfortunately, the Bobcats also had an answer every time to keep ELAC from threatening the lead down the stretch.

David Mitchell of Saddleback led all scorers with 24 pts.

HUSKY BITS

  • ELAC had active hands all day on defense, forcing Saddleback into 24 turnovers and scoring 28 points of those turnovers. They also took 25 more shots than Saddleback, but the problem was they couldn't overcome their opponent's efficient shooting. Saddleback shot 28-47 from the field (59.6%), while East shot 30-72 (41.7%).
  • East LA also struggled behind the arc. The team shot 25% from three (5-20) while Saddleback was 47.1% (8-17).
