San Diego Mesa College, ranked #1 in the state and the defending 3C2A women's volleyball champions, looked everything like a formidable giant as host #19 Pasadena City College could not keep pace in losing to the Olympians, 25-22, 25-11, 25-15, on Wednesday night.
The Lancers (4-7 overall) played well in the opening set v. Mesa (7-0), leading by as much as 20-16 after a 6-0 scoring run. But the Olympians outscored PCC, 9-2, to win the opening set.
Juyeon Lee served on that run and landed an ace before Biko Hollie's kill capped it.
From that point on, Mesa controlled things, taking a 17-6 lead set #2 on its way to a 14-point win, then jumping out to an 18-6, third set advantage before closing out the sweep.
Shaylee Ungos led PCC with seven kills to go with eight set assists. Chayse Hoon added six kills and a solo block while Biko Hollie tacked on five kills and made a team-high six digs. Brianna Galvan contributed two kills and a block and Kamea Vongfak totaled 10 assists, a kill and two aces. Lee finished with five digs.
Pasadena had no answers to stop Mesa's State Player of the Week Halen Kiefer, who blasted 11 kills and served five aces, and teammate Bella Town who scored 10 kills (hit .412) and had three blocks. Mesa played superb defense with 35 digs and had a strong block that limited the Lancers to just 21 kills overall.
PCC next travels to play unranked Irvine Valley on Friday, Sept. 13 at 5 p.m.
