Women's Volleyball Falls to LA Mission to Close First Round of WSC Play

Women's Volleyball completed its first swing through the Western State Conference North Division with a home loss to #9 Los Angeles Mission (25-13, 25-20, 25-22).  The visiting Eagles (ne' Free Spirit) battled the Cougars for the first 20 points of the match, 11-9, but LA Mission got on roll with 14 of the last 18 points to grab the momentum, 25-13.  Cuesta stood strong and jumped out to 10-7 to start for second set, however the Eagles caught them at 10-10 and then traded the next 14 points until they were knotted at 17-17.  The Cougars had a chance to even the match, but LA Mission closed the set on the power of an 8-3 run to take control, 25-20.  Cuesta's Spikers, despite two tough losses and the prospect of a sweep, did not make it easy for their Top 10 foes.  The Cougars left everything on the floor as they went kill-for-kill, dig-for-dig and ace-for-ace all through the third set.  And although Cuesta never led the two teams were tied 22-22 with the match at stake.  The Eagles finally flew free of the Cougars' claws, 23-22, and the Big Cats were forced to call their final time out to regroup.  Unfortunately, they could not stop the Eagles as LA Mission closed out the next two points for the match-clinching win, 25-22.  The loss dropped the Cougars to 10-11 overall and 1-4 in the toughest circuit in the State.   The WSC-North boasts four of its seven teams among the CCCAA's Top 17 teams and Cuesta is just outside that elite pack in 5th place.

The Cuesta Spikers shall begin their second swing through the WSC-North when they travel to Ventura this Friday (6 PM).  The Cougars battled the 17th-ranked Pirates through a five-set loss (21-25, 25-23, 25-16, 23-25, 15-9) in their conference opener on October 2 in SLO.
