SBVC Uses Pounding Second Half to Beat Palo Verde

For the first 20 minutes Friday night, it looked as if the San Bernardino Valley College men's basketball team was going to have its hands full with Palo Verde College.

But the second half turned into a whole other story.

SBVC used an 11-0 run early in the second half to turn the game around, as the Wolverines ended up cruising to a 110-63 victory.

As usual, the Wolverines' smothering defense helped turned the tide, as it forced 21 Palo Verde turnovers. And the Wolverines also dominated on the glass, outrebounding the Pirates 57-29 for the game, with SBVC pulling down 20 offensive rebounds it turned into 30 second-chance points.

Darius Carr led six SBVC players who finished in double figures, with a game-high 23 points. Jason Hilliard posted a double-double, scoring 15 points to go with 11 rebounds. Khemanni Davis and Andre Speight each finished with 14 points while Brian Cabrera and Benjamin Byrd each had 12 points off the bench.

The Wolverines now head into a busy week, as they begin the second half of Inland Empire Athletic Conference play with three games. After a trip to Victor Valley on Monday, SBVC will look to avenge its only conference loss against Chaffey at 7 p.m. Wednesday. The team closes the week at home against Copper Mountain, tipping off about 3 p.m., following the women's game.
