Spikers Sweep the Competition at Home; Return to WSC Play Next Week

This Saturday, Cuesta Women's Volleyball hosted both Lemoore and Ohlone for a tri-meet against Northern California teams.  The Cougars played the opener against Lemoore and the nightcap against Ohlone, while the Golden Eagles and Renegades also met in the sandwich game.   Cuesta came out strong against Lemoore and were on the verge of a sweep, after taking the first two sets (26-14 and 25-22), but the Golden Eagles stole the third set, 25-18, and took the 4th set down to the wire.  After avoiding the sweep, Lemoore tied the Cougars at 20-20 in the 4th set, before watching Cuesta made a run for game-point on the next four serves, 24-20.  Lemoore did not blink and grabbed the next three points, but Cuesta Coach Whitney Meyer called time out to "Ice" Golden Eagles and stop their drive.  The ploy worked, because the Cougars grabbed the next point and clinched the match, 25-23, and 3 sets to 1.  Cuesta took a break after the opener and had a chance to scout Ohlone, which is currently ranked 11th in the CCCAA's NorCal Region.  The Renegades swept a tired Lemoore squad (25-22, 25-13, 25-13) and were ready to face Cuesta in the day's finale.  The Cougars eked out the first set against Ohlone, 26-24, and took control of the match by winning the second set, 25-22, but the Renegades were not willing to have them shut the door.  Ohlone staved off defeat and bounced back to take the next two sets (25-23 and 25-22) and force a fifth and final set to 15.  The Cougars and Renegades compiled 96 points each as they split the first four sets, so the race to fifteen was a battle.  Cuesta jumped out to lead, 7-4, but a quick time out by Ohlone righted their ship and they closed in on the Cougars at 9-8 and pushed the game to the wire at 14-13, before the Cougars closed on the match on the next point, 15-13, for the 3-2 victory.  The Cuesta Spikers are now 9-10 on the season.

Cuesta Women's Volleyball returns to its Western State Conference schedule with two matches next week.  The Cougars travel to #9 Moorpark on Wednesday (6 PM) and return home to host local rival Allan Hancock on Friday (6 PM).  The Cougars and Bulldogs did not make into the CCCAA State Top 25 poll, but they both received votes, finishing 39th and 40th, respectively.
