Rams pick up first win over Contra Costa, split matches at De Anza

CUPERTINO – In its first official match of the season, the Gavilan College women's volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 sweep of Contra Costa College on Wednesday in the first of two matches played at De Anza College.

The Rams had to forfeit its scheduled opening-day match on Aug. 23 but came together for the 25-13, 25-23, 25-14 win in their first time hitting the court as a team.

Freshman Jada Dickens led the Rams in her debut with 10 kills while sophomore Katia Vaillancourt added 8 kills and 8 digs.

Miya Santo paced the offense with 15 assists and Alyssa Maldonado had 8 digs. Juana Ruis contributed 7 digs and 4 kills to the victory while Saribet Bracamontes-Ochoa served up 8 aces.

The Rams couldn't keep the momentum going and suffered a 25-12, 25-10, 25-10 loss to host De Anza to close out the day.

Maldonado and Vaillancourt led Gavilan with 11 digs. Keira Tryforos had a team-best 5 kills.

Gavilan, now 1-3 overall, is back in action on Friday (Sep. 13) when the Rams travel to Columbia College in Sonora for a 5 p.m. non-conference game.
