For 6 minutes and 10 seconds Tuesday night, it looked as if the San Bernardino Valley College women's basketball team looked as if it was going to handle visiting Saddleback.
The Wolverines ran out to a 9-1 lead in the opening minutes, and were causing the Bobcats fits. But by the end of the opening 10-minute quarter, the Bobcats were back within six points, and the Wolverines had committed 10 fouls, compared to only two for Saddleback.
That foul trouble caught up with SBVC, as the Bobcats outscored the Wolverines 23-6 from the charity stripe, as Saddleback ended up winning 69-53.
The Bobcats took 37 free throws in the game, compared to only 10 trips to the free throw line for SBVC. Two Wolverines fouled out as SBVC was whistled for 25 fouls, compared to only 15 for Saddleback.
Part of SBVC's early success was pounding the ball down low to Domineek Butler, who scored eight of her team-high 16 points in the first quarter. But a tougher defense from Saddleback slowed down her success. Mo'nikque Lightfoot added 14 points for SBVC, while Marilynn Jacques ended the game with eight points and eight assists before fouling out late.
