Looking to find some depth to help out the current rotation, the Pasadena City College women's volleyball team worked in two freshmen--outside hitter Elena Uribe and opposite Emma Santa Ana--who had some positive moments in the Lancers sweep at Los Angeles Harbor, 25-23, 25-17, 26-24, on Friday night.
Ranked #24 in the state with a 6-9 record thanks to a difficult pre-conference schedule, PCC rested top hitter Biko Hollie (one set, two kills) and libero Emily Licon against the Seahawks (3-4). The match was a non-conference counting affair between two South Coast Conference teams, the Lancers a member of the North Division and LAHC from the South.
Uribe made a team-high 14 digs, served two aces, and had two kills, including a key spike for set point in the first game. Santa Ana, playing in just her second match of the season, contributed two kills and three blocks.
Chayse Hoon scored seven kills and six digs, Brianna Galvan made four kills and four blocks (two solos), and Savannah Curtis added three kills and six blocks (two solos). Juyeon Lee tallied 13 digs while Shaylee Ungos chipped in five kills, 11 set assists, six digs, two aces and two blocks.
The Lancers worked through a number of unforced errors (17 attack, eight service, three block, and an uncharacteristic five ball-handling mistakes), but it didn't curtail the team's third sweep of the year and first since they had two in the season-opening PCC Tri tourney.
On Wednesday, Oct. 2, the Lancers host Compton College on Youth Volleyball Night, a 6 p.m. first serve at Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium. PCC will begin SCC North play on Friday, Oct. 4 in a home match v. East Los Angeles.
