SBVC Smothers Vikings, Advance to Semifinals

When your team opens the game on a 13-0 run, some teams might be tempted to take their foot off the gas.

Thursday night, the San Bernardino Valley College men's basketball team avoided that temptation.

The Wolverines never led by less than seven from that point on, and led by as many as 30, as SBVC knocked off defending state champion West Valley College 68-40 in the California Community College Athletic Association quarterfinals at Mt. San Antonio College. SBVC will play Fullerton in the semifinals at 3 p.m. Saturday.

"Defense - we all did it together," said sophomore Jason Lee after the game, as the key to the victory. "We've been working for this all year, so we know what it comes with."

It was a smothering, pressure defense that helped the Wolverines on Thursday, as they forced 27 turnovers by the Vikings. SBVC held West Valley to only 15 points in the second half, as the Vikings only attempted 21 shots, and committed 14 of their turnovers in the second 20 minutes.

SBVC opened the 13-0 lead over the opening 3 minutes, 18 seconds of the game, with West Valley finally scoring after a timeout on its fourth shot of the game.

The 13-0 start, "just boosted us," Lee said. "We've prepared for this moment. We've worked for it every day."

The Wolverines led by 11 at the half, and opened the second half on a 15-3 run over the first 8:13 to take a 51-28 lead about halfway through the second half. And while SBVC wasn't at its best from the field, the defense had West Valley shut down on the other end.

"We've got so much more to show, which is crazy," Lee said.

Khemanni Davis led the way offensively for the Wolverines, dropping in a game-high 17 points with seven rebounds. Lee added 16 points, four rebounds, three assists, and three steals, as he moved into third all-time for total career assists in school history. Jason Hilliard held down the middle with 12 points, five rebounds and three blocked shots.

Saturday's game will be streamed at baosn.tv/cccaa at a cost of $12 for the entire day of semifinal action - two men's games, and two women's games.
