Butte Roadrunners Split Softball Conference Opener Against Lassen Cougars
The Butte College Roadrunners kicked off conference play with a hard-fought two-game series against the Lassen College Cougars, coming away with a split after a heartbreaking extra-inning loss in Game 1 and a bounce-back win in Game 2. The series leaves Butte at 1-1 in conference play and 3-14-1 overall.
Game 1: Lassen 5, Butte 4 (9 Innings)
Butte took control early, scoring in the first inning after Evangelina Degros-Perreira singled, was sacrificed to second by Nicole Grupe, and eventually came around on a Taylor Jones RBI single. The Roadrunners extended their lead in the fourth, with Nyah Baker doubling and later scoring on a Camrin Pivniska RBI.
A two-run double by Baker in the fifth put Butte up 4-0, but Lassen staged a dramatic comeback in the seventh. The Cougars capitalized on defensive miscues, scoring four unearned runs with two outs to force extra innings. Butte was unable to respond, and Lassen eventually plated the winning run in the ninth. Despite the tough loss, Butte got strong performances from Baker and Emily Thurman, who each recorded two hits, while Cabria Childers pitched all nine innings without allowing an earned run.
Game 2: Butte 3, Lassen 2
Determined to even the series, Butte responded with a gritty performance in Game 2. Lassen took an early lead in the third, but Butte answered in the fourth when Jones singled and advanced on a passed ball. Taryn Walsh then delivered an RBI double to get the Roadrunners on the board.
With the game tied 2-2, Butte took the lead after Stacie Sanders walked, stole second, and was driven home by Grupe. Baker took control in the circle, throwing a complete game while allowing just seven hits to secure her first conference win.
