The state #9-ranked Pasadena City College women's volleyball team put it on the line in making a wild comeback from down 2-0, but in the end #16 Moorpark outlasted the host Lancers in an epic five sets, 27-25, 25-17, 25-27, 25-27, 15-10, on Wednesday night. The match lasted 2-1/2 hours.
Things originally looked bleak for PCC (3-5) after it let a 24-21 first set lead go by the wayside and then faced match point twice in the third before Shaylee Ungos posted back-to-back aces to keep the Lancers alive with a win in the third set.
In the fourth, again PCC did a Houdini act, fighting off two more match points and using a kill by Chayse Hoon for another set win in extra points.
Moorpark (4-1) scored four blocks for points in the fifth and led throughout before consecutive kills by Alesia Thomas capped the Raiders' road victory.
Hoon powered 16 kils to pace PCC while Shaylee Ungos just missed a triple-double with nine kills, 18 set assists, 10 digs, three aces and two blocks. Biko Hollie added 14 kills, 16 digs and two aces while Emily Licon tallied 22 digs and dished out seven assists. Kamea Vongfak added 17 assists, nine digs and three aces while Brianna Galvan contributed four kills and four blocks. Savannah Curtis picked up five kills.
Moorpark was paced by Abby Montana, who slammed 19 kills and used a strong serve to net six aces, Thomas with 17 kills and 13 digs, and Gaby Schirado who handed out 50 assists, had five kills on dump plays, 10 digs and added six blocks.
Pasadena will be back in action at Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium on Friday, Sept. 6 in the PCC Quad as it faces first Mt. San Jacinto at 11 a.m. and then San Bernardino Valley at 1:30 p.m.
PCC is now looking to stop a 5-match losing streak despite its current Top 10 ranking.
