For one quarter, the Pasadena City College women's basketball team looked like a squad on all cylinders in taking a commanding 25-13 lead over East Los Angeles. The Lancers though have had trouble stopping opponents of late and they had no answer to a Huskies comeback in losing their third straight South Coast Conference North Division game, 90-68, at Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium on Wednesday night.
Despite shooting 50 percent from the field overall (23 of 46 attempts), the Lancers were outscored a combined 48-21 over the second and third quarters. ELAC more than doubled PCC on the boards, outrebounding the home team, 61-27.
It's been a struggle for PCC this season, now 5-16 overall and still looking for their first conference win at 0-3 in the division.
Against ELAC (10-9, 2-0), Lyndsey Valverde made her first four shots from the field and dished out three assists as PCC opened up a 12-point lead. Valverde finished tied with teammate Monica Menzies, each with 21 points. Valverde was 7-for-10 on field goals and a perfect 7-for-7 at the free throw line while Menzies was 8-for-15 shooting, including sinking four 3-pointers. Ava Chang added 10 points (7-for-10 at the line) off the bench while Kimberly Dominguez hit 4-for-5 for her eight points.
Derricka Millinghaus tallied 17 points for the Huskies while Moriah Mosley, the daughter of ELAC men's basketball head coach John Mosley, scored 15 points.
On Jan. 24, state #3-ranked host Mt. San Antonio hammered PCC, 91-36. Valverde led the Lancers with 13 points, seven rebounds and three steals while Sheridan Orange notched eight points.
In the squad's conference opener on Jan. 22, the visiting Lancers had a poor shooting effort (23 percent from the field) and LA Trade-Tech rained in 13 treys in a 86-45 PCC defeat. Valverde posted 17 points and nine rebounds, Menzies added 11 points, and Jocelyn Sanchez had five points, four boards and two steals.
On Friday, Jan. 31, the Lancers travel to face Rio Hondo College in a 5 p.m. SCC North tip-off.
