SBVC Rallies But Can't Stop Imperial Valley

To judge the character of a team early in the season, coaches will often look to see how their team responds to a slow start.

Wednesday night, San Bernardino Valley College women's basketball coach got to see that character in action, as the Wolverines trailed by 10 points at the end of a quarter after shooting just 3-for-17 from the field in the opening 10 minutes.

The Wolverines responded in the second quarter, closing the gap to four at half, and then tying the game at 30 early in the third quarter, before visiting Imperial Valley went on an 11-0 run in about three minutes, leading toa 71-60 Imperial Valley victory.

SBVC chipped away at the Imperial Valley lead in the second quarter, outscoring the Desert Warriors 14-5 over the last 6:28. A 3-pointer from Mo'Nikque Lightfoot at the 8:18 mark of the third quarter tied the game before Imperial Valley went on its run.

Lightfoot led the Wolverines with 18 points, while Maryanne Palacios added 17 more. Domineek Butler was the only other Wolverine in double figures, with 11 points, while Tiyanna Padilla scored nine points and had nine rebounds for SBVC. Kassiah Harper also contributed nine rebounds, as the teams ended the game with 43 rebounds apiece.

Imperial Valley's Cecilia Costa led all scorers with 22 points.
