A week after travelling to Monterey for a four-team tournament, without playing each other, the Cougars hosted the Lobos for a head-to-head match. The two teams split the first 20 serves on the nights, but once the Lobos reached double digits they got hot. Monterey claimed 15 of the next 23 points and took control of the match, 25-16. In the second set, Cuesta locked down and stayed within three points of the Lobos, but also could not put them away as Monterey also stole the second set, 25-23. In hole and down 2-0, Cuesta turned the narrow loss in Game 2 into motivation for the to pick up a win. The Cougars stepped up and battled with a dominant performance in the third set. Cuesta maintained a lead of 5 to 10 points the whole set, although the Lobos did survive three set points before falling to Cuesta, 25-18. The fourth and final started close at 9-7, but Monterrey jumped out with 6-2 run, 15-9 and made their push for the win. The Cougars rallied back within three points, 18-15, however the Lobos closed out the set and match on a 7-4 run, 25-19. The setback dropped Cuesta to 2-7 on the season, while the Lobos improved to 7-1 overall.
Cuesta Women's Volleyball is back in action next Wednesday with a doubleheader in Rancho Cucamonga against host Chaffey (2 PM) and Fullerton (4 PM). The Cougars open the tournament against the host Panthers (1-5) and then play the Hornets (1-3), both teams, respectively.
