SBVC Shows Promise in Season Opening Defeat

The San Bernardino Valley College women's basketball team had a two-point halftime lead in its season opener Saturday.

But nine second half turnovers and a cold spell from the field in the fourth quarter ended up costing the Wolverines, as they fell to College of the Canyons 59-52.

SBVC led by two after an entertaining, back-and-forth first quarter, and both teams struggled for points in the second - each only scoring eight points in the frame. Canyons came back from the break strong, using a late run to take a four-point lead into the final quarter before putting the Wolverines away.

The Wolverines actually committed less turnovers in the game - charged with 16 to Canyons' 23 - but it was at the foul line that the game got away from SBVC. The Wolverines were whistled for 22 fouls to only 10 commited by Canyons in the game, and the Cougars took advantage, hitting 11 of 21 from the free throw line, while SBVC was only 6 of 14 from the charity stripe.

Domineek Butler led SBVC with 11 points, while Destiny Melendez pulled down 10 rebounds.

Canyons' Mia Ceja led all scorers with 22 points.
