Serpas' Game Winner Send Hawks to 3C2A SoCal Round Three
The 11th-seeded Santiago Canyon College women's soccer team entered into the second round of the 3C2A Southern Regional playoffs as the underdog against the sixth-seeded Mt. San Antonio College Mounties on the road. On a cold night in Walnut, CA, it was the Hawks who heated up at the right moment as sophomore Scarlett Serpas struck late to hand the Hawks a 2-1 victory.
In a game of few chances, the Hawks struck first. Sophomore Sloane De Torres played the ball in to sophomore Alyssa Marino, who drove beyond her defender in to the penalty area to finish with the first score of the contest at the 10 minute mark.
A talented Mt. San Antonio team continued to build, and looked to create from out wide, and found some success late in the half, scoring from close range to make the score 1-1 at the break.
Both teams continued to push forward in the second period, and it wasn't until the closing stages that the Hawks took the lead. Marino found freshman Mia Lussier and her cross was half-cleared. Serpas picked up the clearance and turned inside one player before hitting a strike from distance beyond the Mt SAC keeper.
The Hawks backline of freshman Jordyn Gallegos, sophomore Jordyn Lamastra , freshman Beatriz Perez and De Torres, with freshman Makayla Worcester in goal, continued to hold firm. It was Perez who came closest to scoring as the game entered added time as SCC closed out the game.
A worthy victory means that Santiago Canyon (13-4-5) will face off against the third-seeded Saddleback College Bobcats (16-2-3) on Tuesday, November 26 at 7 p.m. in the third round of the 3C2A Southern Regional playoffs
