
San Bernardino, California - The #19-seeded MiraCosta College Spartans showcased grit and determination in their opening-round SoCal Regional Playoff matchup, defeating #14 San Bernardino Valley in a heart-stopping shootout after a 2-2 double-overtime draw on November 20. The game, held at San Bernardino, was a testament to the Spartans' resilience and teamwork, propelling them into the next round to face #3 El Camino College.
MiraCosta struck first in the 18th minute, with sophomore forward Charaboy Inriestra delivering a composed finish off a solo effort to give the Spartans an early 1-0 lead. Inriestra was a key playmaker throughout the match, tallying two shots on goal and showing remarkable composure under pressure. Defensively, Dominik Wicks anchored the backline while stepping up offensively when it mattered most. In the second overtime, Wicks capitalized on a loose ball, blasting a stunning unassisted goal in the 109th minute to give MiraCosta a brief 2-1 lead.
San Bernardino Valley, however, refused to back down. Just seven minutes later, Daniel Rodas equalized with a determined individual effort, sending the match to a decisive penalty shootout.
MiraCosta's shootout performance was ice-cold under pressure. Brett Koser, Jacob Clark, and Gavyn Golub all converted their penalties, while goalkeeper Bryan Casteneda shined, making critical stops to seal the victory. Casteneda's five saves during regulation and overtime were pivotal in keeping the Spartans alive against a relentless San Bernardino offense that outshot MiraCosta 29-11.
Other standout performances included defender Alexander Oregon, who logged 120 minutes of tireless work and helped limit the damage from San Bernardino's 13 second-half shots.
