Speakman’s Career-High 42 Assists Soars Hawks Past Compton
Sophomore setter Peyton Speakman has been the gear to the Santiago Canyon College women's volleyball team's offense for the past year. Sophomore outside hitter Chelsea Riedel has been the beneficiary of her pinpoint setting and has acted as the team's top offense weapon since last season. These two returners linked up for an impressive showing as they led the Hawks past the Compton College Tartars in three sets on opening night.
Speakman recorded a pair of 30-plus assist games last season with her previous career-high mark reading at 37 assists. She surpassed that mark tonight by lofting up 42 assists which currently stands as her career-high total.
She located the swinging arms of five different players with Riedel being the go-to bludgeon.
Riedel, who was named to the 2023 Orange Empire Conference (OEC) First-Team All-Conference squad, picked up right where she left off. She notched an impressive .362 hitting percentage and was one of two players to earn double-digit kills. Additionally, she manned the defensive front by racking up 13 assists.
Sophomore outside Sophie Ziglinski recorded 10 kills and 10 digs after coming on strong in the third set. She rounded out her night with one service ace.
While the returners experienced a strong showing in their second season opener of their careers, the freshman class showed up with a bang by combining for 12 kills, 41 digs, and eight service aces.
Freshman outside Kayleigh Guyot was two kills shy of reaching double digits by hammering home eight kills. She added a match-pacing five services aces to go along with nine digs.
Freshman Liean Navarro was money on the backline by getting low for a team-high 15 digs, while freshman Megan Morton notched five digs.
