REDWOOD CITY – No. 5-seeded Cañada College moved a step closer to a trip to the state championships thanks to a 2-1 win in overtime at home over No. 12 City College of San Francisco on Saturday in a second-round game of the Northern California Regional Playoffs.
The Colts advance to Round 3 and will head north to play at No. 4 Folsom Lake College on Tuesday (Nov. 26) at 7 p.m. Cañada and Folsom Lake will be meeting for the second time this season. On Oct. 25, the Colts suffered a 3-1 loss in Folsom.
Folsom Lake played No. 13 Taft College to a 1-1 tie and advanced on a 4-2 victory in penalty kicks in its second-round game on Saturday. The Falcons enter Tuesday's contest with an 11-7-4 overall record.
90 minutes of soccer wasn't enough to decide a winner between Cañada and San Francisco on Saturday.
CCSF got on the board first with a goal in the 23rd minute. The Rams held that lead all the way until late in the second half when Noah Lake knocked in the equalizer in the 83rd minute to stave off a Colts' defeat.
And with time running out in the second OT period, Justin Galvez scored what proved to be the game-winner in the 115th minute off the assists from Joshua Ramos Garcia. Goalkeeper Luis Evangelista totaled 6 saves for Cañada to earn the win.
The Colts improved to 13-3-6 overall with the victory. Two more wins are needed by Cañada to advance to the 3C2A State Championships on Dec. 6 & 8 at American River College in Sacramento.
