REDWOOD CITY – Devin Bettencourt put together a solid start on the mound, tossing 7 shutout innings, to help lead Cañada College to a 3-1 win over visiting College of San Mateo on Saturday in the finale of a three-game Coast Conference North Division series.
The Colts took two out of three games from the Bulldogs for the series win. Cañada improved to 14-15 overall and 2-7 in the Coast North.
Cañada opened the set on Tuesday with an 8-6 win at home but suffered a 25-5 loss in San Mateo on Thursday before earning the narrow win on Saturday in Game 3.
Game 1: Cañada 8, San Mateo 6
Max Ross' three-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning proved to be the game-winner as Cañada erased a 5-1, sixth-inning deficit to beat the Bulldogs in Game 1 at home.
Ross went 3 for 5 with 3 RBI and a pair of runs to lead the Colts' offense. Kyler Bittner also knocked in 2 runs, going 2 for 4 with a double. Chris Arce added 3 hits (3 for 4, 1 RBI, 2 runs).
Game 2: San Mateo 25, Cañada 5
Carson Vance went 3 for 4 with a double and RBI to lead Cañada in a tough loss on the road.
Game 3: Cañada 3, San Mateo 1
Bettencourt struck out 5 over 7 innings while scattering 4 hits on his way to earning the win for the Colts.
Cañada scored in a run in the bottom of the first thanks to an RBI ground out by Dom Avila. John Paul Avila came in to score on a wild pitch in the second, and Bittner smacked a RBI double in the fifth to score Ross for the Colts' final run.
Zak Sullivan closed it out with 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.
Up next: Cañada begins a three-game Coast Conference North Division series on Tuesday (Apr. 2) at De Anza College at 2:30 p.m. Game 2 is in Redwood City on Thursday at 2:30 with the final back at De Anza on Saturday at 1 p.m.
