Big Second Half Secures 3C2A Southern Regional Round One Win
The No. 11-seeded Santiago Canyon College women's soccer team and the No. 22-seeded Mt. San Jacinto College Eagles were locked in a scoreless tie after the first half in their 3C2A Southern Regional Round One showdown on Wednesday afternoon. Despite a slow start offensively, the Hawks exploded in the second half, scoring three goals to secure a commanding 3-1 victory.
Sophomore Samantha Aguila put the Hawks on the scoreboard first in the 52nd minute, finishing off a loose ball that was bouncing around the box near the end line. Sophomore Gigi Bruno tapped the ball to Aguila, who found the back of the net for the game's opening goal.
Just one minute later, sophomore Alyssa Marino fired a shot with her left foot that was dished by sophomore Jaqueline Arroyo, sending the ball past the outstretched arms of the Eagles' goalkeeper to put the Hawks up by two.
The Hawks kept the pressure on, adding another goal in the 58th minute. Aguila scored her second of the game on a well-placed cross from freshman Mia Lussier, sealing the 3-1 victory.
Aguila recorded her third multi-goal game of the season, leading the charge with both of her goals finding the back of the net. Marino's only shot of the game proved to be decisive, as it resulted in her seventh goal of the season.
Freshman Mikayla Worcester earned the win with two saves. Although she allowed one goal, it had no impact on the outcome of the match.
The Hawks (13-4-5) will continue their playoff run on Saturday, November 23, in the second round of regional play, where they will face the No. 6-seeded Mt. San Antonio College Mounties (14-5-3).
