CLOVIS – Serenity Torres' goal in the 61st minute proved to be the game-winner while goalkeeper Kaylen Guerra posted 7 saves as Clovis Community College pulled out a narrow 1-0 Central Valley Conference win over visiting Merced College on Friday afternoon.
The Crush put an end to a four-game winless streak and handed second-place Merced just its second conference loss. Clovis also avenged a 2-0 setback at Merced (7-5-1, 5-2-1 CVC) in both teams' Central Valley Conference opener last month.
Clovis moved to 3-10-1 overall and 2-5-1 in the CVC.
On Friday, the two squads battled in a scoreless first half. The game remained scoreless all the way until the 61st minute when Torres was able to break through for the goal.
Merced was relentless in its attack but Guerra was up to the challenge. The Blue Devils totaled 14 shots, including seven on goal that Guerra was able to turn away. For Guerra, it was her third shutout of the season.
The Crush will look to keep the momentum going next Friday (Oct. 25) when they travel to rival Fresno City College for a 4 p.m. conference game.
