Hawks Lead from Opening Serve for Second-Straight Win
After matching their season wins total from last season in a sweep over Compton last week, the Santiago Canyon College women's volleyball team looked to double last season's victory mark in a non-conference showdown against the Copper Mountain Fighting Cacti. The Hawks led coast-to-coast in a tromping over Copper Mountain in three-straight sets.
The Hawks were dominant by recording 34 service aces and only surrendering two attack errors. They swung for a season-high .525 kill percentage with five different players recording at least one kill. Additionally, they did not allow the Fighting Cacti to surpass seven points in each set.
Leading the way was sophomore setter Peyton Speakman who found the hardwood for a career-high 14 services aces which stands as a Santiago Canyon record. Furthermore, she recorded 20 assists by feeding five different players.
Sophomore Chelsea Riedel and freshman Riley Bingel shared the team lead in kills with six, while sophomore Sophie Ziglinski hammered home five kills. Sophomore Ashlyn Smith made her inaugural debut and recorded four kills and three digs. Ziglinkski led the team with five digs.
Seven players recorded at least one service ace with Speakman leading the way. Freshman Kayleigh Guyot lofted up seven aces and bagged five digs, while Riedel notched five aces. Freshman Megan Morton recorded a pair of aces while chipping in two kills.
