COS Shakes Off Slow Start in 11-5 Comeback Victory over Coalinga
COALINGA, Calif. – The College of the Sequoias baseball team (13-16, 6-7) scored 10 unanswered runs after falling behind early, defeating Coalinga College (3-24, 1-12) for an 11-5 road win on Tuesday afternoon.
The Giants fell behind after allowing five runs in the fourth inning, but quickly responded with four runs in the 6th, three in the 7th, and two more in the 8th to take full control.
COS had opened the scoring in the third when Cruz Rodriguez (Redwood HS) singled home Ned Ceklic (Alberta). After Coalinga's five-run 4th inning, the Giants began to chip away in the 5th with a solo homer from Ceklic, making it 5-2.
A four-run 6th inning gave Sequoias the lead for good. Payton Garcia (Fowler HS) crushed a two-RBI triple, Caleb Catalano (San Francisco) tied it with an RBI single, and Rodriguez brought home the go-ahead run on a groundout.
In the seventh, Walker Selley (Bermuda) drove in two more with a single that was misplayed in center, then scored himself on an error to push the lead to 9-5. COS tacked on two more in the 8th by capitalizing on Coalinga's mistakes.
Tyson Kilbreath (Alberta) picked up the win on the mound, going six innings and allowing five runs on 11 hits. Chance Jasso (Redwood HS) and Aiden Bryan (Mt Whitney HS) combined for three shutout innings in relief.
Ceklic led the offense with three hits, including a homer and triple, while Garcia, Rodriguez, and Selley each tallied multi-RBI efforts.
