Men's Tennis Come Up Just Short, 5-4, Against Reedley 

REEDLEY, Calif. – The College of the Sequoias men's tennis team fought hard but fell in a narrow 5-4 loss to Reedley College on March 7. The Giants had opportunities, but fell short. 

Doubles Play: Close Matches Slip Away 

The Giants were competitive in all three doubles matches but were unable to capitalize on big points. The No. 2 team of Conner Travis (Lemoore HS) and Yufan He (Mission Oak HS) delivered the only doubles win for COS, securing an 8-2 victory. At No. 1, Masen Davis (Hanford West HS) and Kenneth Catalan (Lemoore HS) battled to an 8-8 tie but lost a tight tiebreaker 9-7. The No. 3 pairing of Elijah Mendez (Mt. Whitney HS) and Donovan Castillo (Redwood HS) also played a close match but fell 8-6. 

Singles Play Keeps Giants in the Fight 

In singles, the Giants showed resilience and secured key wins. Davis controlled play at No. 1, earning a 6-2, 6-4 victory. Catalan came through with a solid 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 6, and He delivered a tough comeback victory at No. 5, rallying from a set down to win 2-6, 6-2, 6-4. 

Despite these wins, Reedley picked up victories at No. 2, No. 3, and No. 4 singles, ultimately clinching the match. 

From the Baseline 

Head coach Martin Herrera reflected on the close loss, stating, "We definitely had our chances to win this match, especially in doubles. Losing two close doubles matches at No. 1 and No. 3 really made the difference. Our players are moving in the right direction, but we need to focus on the little things that can determine the outcome in tight matches." 

Upcoming Matches 

The Giants will aim to bounce back as they continue conference play at home next week. They are set to host Porterville on Tuesday, March 11, at 1:00 p.m., followed by a matchup against Fresno City on Wednesday, March 12, at 1:00 p.m.
