Giants Fall to Modesto in NorCal Team Quarterfinal

MODESTO, Calif. – College of the Sequoias men's tennis team saw its season run come to an end on April 8, with a 7-1 loss to Modesto Junior College in the California Community College Athletic Association (3C2A) NorCal Team Quarterfinal. The Giants battled hard on the road, picking up a doubles win and pushing several singles matches into tight sets, but the host Pirates proved to be too strong.

Doubles Action Opens the Afternoon

The Giants got off to a competitive start in doubles play. The pairing of Masen Davis (Hanford West HS) and Kenneth Catalan (Lemoore HS) delivered COS's lone team point with a clutch 8-6 win over Modesto's Jack Shaw and Alex Carlin at No. 2 doubles. Despite their effort, COS dropped the other two doubles contests. Conner Travis (Lemoore HS) and Yufan He (Mission Oak HS) fell 8-3 at No. 1, while Elijah Mendez (Mt. Whitney HS) and Adyn Richmond (Mission Oak HS) were defeated 8-2 at No. 3.

Modesto Clinches the Match in Singles

Modesto took control in singles, winning four completed matches in straight sets to secure the team victory. Alex Carlin defeated He 6-1, 6-1, and Ryan Moore topped Mendez 6-2, 6-0. Catalan and Richmond were also defeated in straight sets.

Two matches went unfinished as the overall team result was decided. Travis was even at 1-1 in the second set after dropping the first 6-4.

Season Comes to a Close

With the team playoffs now complete, the Giants will turn their attention to individual postseason play. COS qualified six players—including all three doubles teams—for the 3C2A State Championships, which will take place April 25–28 at the Ojai Tennis Tournament.
