COD (3-1) opened up the 2024 season at the Eagles Tournament at LA Mission College in Sylmar, grabbing 3 wins, all by way of the sweep.
Desert began with a match-up with the East Los Angeles Huskies of Monterey Park (1-3), sweeping away the South Coast Conference – North Division opponents 3-0 (25-12, 25-19, 25-19).
Sophomore outside hitter Alexia Siani-Rader (Palm Desert Xavier College Prep) led the team with 8 digs, had 5 kills and 3 service aces and sophomore setter Ashley Estrada (Queen Creek (AZ) American Leadership Academy) led the team with 25 set assists. Sophomore middle blocker Stacie Alexander (Yucca Valley H.S.) led the team with 5 assist blocks and freshman outside hitter Clairie Thomas (La Quinta H.S.) led the team with 13 kills and 5 service aces. Sophomore outside hitter Bella Branconier (Palm Desert Xavier College Prep) had 5 kills.
Then the Roadrunners faced another South Coast Conference – North Division opponent pushing past the Rio Hondo Roadrunners of Whittier (0-4) in a sweep 3-0 (25-17, 25-10, 25-15).
Freshman middle blocker Alyssia Castro (Palm Desert Xavier College Prep) had 4 kills and Siani-Rader led the team with 12 digs and also had 4 kills. Estrada led the team with 23 set assists and 3 service aces and Thomas led the team with 13 kills and had 5 digs. Branconier had 8 digs on the night.
On day two, the Roadrunners started off with the host Los Angeles Mission Eagles of Sylmar (4-0). Desert has faced their Western State Conference – North Division opponent five times since 1976 and are 0-5, this time falling 3-1 (25-22, 26-28, 25-17, 25-12).
Thomas led the team with 12 kills and had 15 digs and Siani-Rader led the team with 4 service aces and 17 digs and had 7 kills. Estrada led the team with 21 set assists and had 4 assist blocks. Alexander had 5 assist blocks and Branconier led the team with 6 assist blocks. Castro had 5 assist blocks in the early afternoon loss.
Wrapping up the tournament, Desert faced East Los Angeles for a second time with the same result, a sweep, but it was not as easy this time, winning 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-17).
Siani-Rader led the team with 10 kills and 7 digs and Thomas led the team with 4 service aces and had 9 kills. Estrada led the team with 29 set assists and had 5 digs and Alexander had 3 service aces in the evening sweep.
